Fort William to Slockavullin near Kilmartin
Stats for the day were exceptional for me: 85 miles with 5700 feet of ascent and 2100 active calories. The main road to the Corran ferry (starting as early as 6:50 for lighter traffic) was followed by Sustrans Route 87 all the way here. Much of this is off-the-road on good surfaces and any roads used are minor and not busy.
Arrival at the Kilchrennan Inn was between mealtimes and so they put on the fryer to cook me a bowl of wonderful chunky chips! (Next time my plan will be to set off from closer to the inn to guarantee arrival in time for lunch).
The weather was better than that on Skye yesterday, but still very little stuff has been kept dry and some gear is wringing wet. There are so many raging rivers and noise also from what used to be streams. This route would have been tough enough without the wind, and has exhausted me.
Chris Maddox has put a lot of work into the campsite and is keen to help backpackers and bikepackers. A shelter for bike, camper and some gear is welcome and the facilities on offer make it remarkable value for money. It would be a possible base for a visit to the Kilchrennan Inn. Next time the weather at the campsite is very likely to be much better than today’s, and when use of other facilities such as a camp shower may be more tempting.
